Objective

To introduce participants to the idea of ergonomics, healthy workstation habits, and share some demos, scary images to persuade people it’s more serious than it feels, and tips + exercises to combat it.

Description

Ergo…what? Well, even if you haven’t heard of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, you’ve probably experienced that knot in your shoulder when you’ve been working too long… And that stiff neck? What about the tingling in your wrists and thumbs?
It really shouldn’t be there.
In my session I’ll introduce participants to the idea of ergonomics, healthy workstation habits, and share some demos, scary images to persuade people it’s more serious than it feels, and tips + exercises to combat it.
Ergonomics looks at efficiency in the workplace, but not at your output per se, but rather the cost to your body.

Qualification: experience – both in presenting on it (at barcamps) and living with it (I hurt my hands from overwork in 2003 and lost the use of both hands for 3 months. I’ve had every form of physiotherapy known and I’m an evangelist for healthy working!)

Speaker bio

Chhavi Sachdev is a multimedia editor and reporter with a background in science, travel, environmental and human interest reportage. She wears many hats, but what’s relevant here is that while working for the Boston Globe a decade ago, she learned that there is such a thing as overwork and it’d be really nice to have access to spare parts for your body.
