“There are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them!” - Vicki Baum
We are happy when we dance.
Somewhere deep inside, we know that.
Yet, we’re often shy to let ourselves dance. Sometimes we feel we can’t.
Sometimes we feel we shouldn’t.
Sometimes we simply just feel too much to dance.
That’s where Dance Movement Therapy comes in. It creates a safe space where we can let it all go and rejoice at the same time. Because through dance, the body pulls the mind to move with it, shed a little baggage, and do a little jig.
So come, let’s dance and be happy!
Dance Movement Therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process, which furthers the emotional, cognitive and physical integration of the individual.
- American Dance Therapy Association
That, at least, seems to be the formal definition of Dance Movement Therapy. Simply put, the body and the mind move in tandem. And Dance Movement Therapy uses this basic principle to allow us to move to a better space.
While exploring different activities with music, we experience the movements our body intuitively makes, rediscover long forgotten movements, and create our own dance by allowing our body to follow its rhythm. The mind instinctively reflects these new discoveries. And together, body and mind dance towards a happier self.
Participants simply need to bring themselves, ready to dance. :)
Would be great if participants are comfortably dressed, as at some point of time or the other we end up rolling on the floor! So, track pants / loose pants & a tee, salwar kameez or even kurta pajama are ideal. Skirts, jeans, saris, fitted pants or t-shirts end up sometimes restricting movement, so are best avoided.
Also a bottle of water, as it is a movement session and we will probably get thirsty after kicking up a storm :)
Natasha, Founder - Facilitator, Three Left Feet
I love dancing. Always have. I danced throughout my graduation and post-graduation days in New York and Bombay. And also when I managed modern retail accounts for one of the biggest companies in the world. But I’d forgotten just how much I loved dance. How much I had felt one with myself while training with Tanusree Shankar, Sonal Mansingh and the neighborhood Kathak teacher.
So I let my day job go and started a new journey with dance, theatre, meditation and other things I loved. I explored Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Dance Movement Therapy with The Danceworx, TR Dance Company, Tripura Kashyap and Kolkata Sanved. I also got the opportunity to train in the more physical forms of theatre with Neeraj Kabi and Hartman DeSouza. There were also Kalaripayattu, Chhau and Yoga that made me realize that more than just dance or theatre, what I was really passionate about was movement.
And so happened Three Left Feet.
Three Left Feet came up as an idea to encourage each individual to dance their own unique beautiful dance. Because, we all are happy when we dance :)
