About the play:
Broken homes are a subculture in their own. They have their own conversations, silences, their own pattern of relationships and how they occur and disengage… Some which is common among them, this is what intrigued me immensely when I first started seeing these patterns.
The art world has tapped into this subculture abundantly, but mostly in stories surrounding and belonging to the adults.
‘Secret Society- Children of Divorce’ as it is straightly named, is a conversation among the Children living in these homes, and sometimes between them and the world outside. It also a conversation (And more importantly, the lack of it) between the children and adults in such a scenario. The beginning point of the story is that all these Children of Divorce, they have a Secret, which lives with them constantly. They don’t know about each others’ stories initially but they unknowingly set events in motion which get them to collide against each other.
Their personalities come alive, relationships are born and left behind, new thoughts are discovered eventually leading up to an ending involving high drama and sentiment.
Genre: Experimental high drama.

Written and Directed by Shivam Sharma. (Previous plays: So Many Socks with Quasar Padamsee, Colourblind with Manav Kaul, Marriageology with Sunil Shanbag)

Theatrical devices used:

The play uses a lot of literary devices. Conversations are embedded with social references which hint at larger contexts and problems in the society. I am particularly excited to see how people catch and respond to them.
Objects play a huge part in the story and they sort of come to life, and not just witness the doings of the characters but also respond and affect them.
Like any other young artist’s works, there are abstractions, physical movements, songs and lots of theatrical indulgences.
… Highlights the audience can expect:

  • One of the stories in the play explores relationship between two young men. We don’t hear these stories often on stage. And it’s especially interesting because the context in which the relationship develops makes it accessible to people who might not have very familiar with watching or reading such a story. It’s beautiful because this is not the central plot of the play, it just occurs naturally on the side, lives its time, like any relationship. Its high time Mumbai got to see Homosexual relationships represented in a non-extreme manner.
  • One of the major things the play focuses on is how the young people view the society and its doings. Lot of adults don’t have a proper insight into this, and it’s a great opportunity for them to listen in to the conversations young people have amongst them. It’s not very different from what their own children think.

Shivam Sharma, is a writer, actor, and theatre maker. He is the founder at ‘Somethings Simple’, an initiative that aims to bring LBGTIQ stories to Indian Stage, Film and Writing. He was last seen in ManavKaul’s Colourblind and Sunil Shanbag’s Marriageology. His work includes Quasar Padamsee’s So Many Socks and Indo-American collaborative feature film Red Gold. His two plays as a playwright and theatre maker are Secret Society: Children of Divorce and Age of Certainty. He is also one of the 14 selected playwrights from India selected for ‘Writers Bloc 4’, a play writing program by The Royal Court Theatre, UK and Rage Production, Mumbai under which he will open a new play in 2015. He is a consultant creative and copywriter at Meltwater Creatives.
